The Alberta Oldtimers Motocross Association [AOTMX] and The Wildrose Motocross Association [WRMA] are pleased to announce that St Albert, Alberta based Riverside Yamaha-Suzuki-KTM is the Title Sponsor of the 1 st Annual Canadian Vet Motocross Nationals to be held in Alberta in August 2008. The Vet Nationals will recognize older [“Vet”] motorcycle racers who continue to participate and enjoy the sport of off-road motocross after their 30th birthday. Modelled after the White Brothers World Vet Championships held in California for the past 20 years, the series will comprise a 10 moto [race] format spread over two weekends in August.
Mr Gord Koll, President of the organizing committee, stated that he was pleased to announce the signing of Riverside Yamaha-Suzuki-KTM as the Title Sponsor, after considering a number of options for sponsorship and support from both within and outside the industry.
“Riverside Yamaha-Suzuki-KTM is well known across Canada for its strong support for the sport, not only as a retailer of top quality products and services, but also as a team owner of its own motocross team for a number of years, and through its support of local events and organisations. The Riverside Racing team competed in the CMRC Canadian Motocross Nationals coast to coast against the very best teams with full factory support and still achieved significant results against these well supported and financed teams” Mr Koll stated.
For the past three years, Riverside Yamaha-Suzuki-KTM has also sponsored Edmonton’s own Zoli Berenyi, who is now 75 years old. Mr Berenyi has won numerous World Championships in the +60 age class at the White Bros World Championship held in California every year, and he will be keen to secure a Canadian Championship in Alberta, riding his Suzuki RMZ250 supplied by Riverside.
The Championship comprises the following:
Event 1 is being held at Antler Lake MX Park east of Edmonton in conjunction with the Alberta Round of the International Oldtimers Championship on the weekend of August 16-17.
Event 2 is being held at the WRMA’s Blackfoot Park complex in downtown Calgary on the weekend of August 23-24.
The series comprises a total of 10 motos [races] per class, 3 on each Saturday and two on each Sunday. The winners will be crowned and awards given for the Canadian Vet Champions at the end of the second weekends racing in Calgary. In addition, the Vet Nationals will feature a vintage bike class for riders over 30 years of age and for motorcycles generally older than 20 years.
The events will feature live broadcasts on AOTMX FM radio, fully catered Saturday night dinners, pit row retail market, entertainment and a fun family atmosphere, along with top class Vet racing for all age groups from 30 years and up. As well, a +30 age group ladies class will see the top Vet ladies racers in Canada competing against each other for the Title and bragging rights. The ladies classes at all motocross events across Canada have been growing significantly, and in Alberta, ladies classes regularly comprise more than 40 riders who start every race with the same dedication and enthusiasm as their male counterparts.
Mr Danny Yaggey, Race Team Manager advised that “We are pleased and excited to be part of the 1 st Annual Canadian Vet Motocross Nationals to be held in Alberta in August this year. The two organising clubs have considerable experience at managing World Class events, and we are proud to have our name associated with such a prestigious and worthwhile event for Vet racers “. Mr Yaggey added, “In the past I have competed in race events with the Alberta Vets and I know the level of intense competition, sportsmanship and skill that these racers bring to this National Championship. Just because these racers are older, doesn’t diminish the enormous sacrifices that they make to be the very best in their respective age groups and skill levels. I am looking forward to seeing Canadian and World Champion vet racers competing in the Edmonton and Calgary rounds of the Championship.”
“It was an easy decision for Riverside Yamaha-Suzuki-KTM to invest in the 1 st Annual Canadian Vet Motocross Nationals, based on our experience with the organizing Clubs, our support for the sport across Canada and our belief that it was time for the Vet racers to have their own dedicated National Championship from 2008 onwards. We will be supported the event in as many ways as possible, including continuing our sponsorship of current +60 World Champion, Mr Zoli Berenyi Snr, and a number of other +30 age racers, racing Yamaha, Suzuki and KTM products.”
