2 Tribes: Kyle Beaton and Johnny Montes

Photos by Allison Kennedy and James Lissimore

Kyle Beaton and Johnny Montes. It doesn’t seem like a great match up, but with Rothesay, New Brunswick’s Montes staying at Beaton’s home in Surrrey, BC, while racing the Canadian Arenacross Championships, we figured they would have some good dirt on each other. Actually, the two racers, along with Colton Facciotti, will be doing stunt work for a movie called
Freestyle in two weeks. Montes says it’s similar to Supercross: The Movie, so it should be an instant classic. So here we go, a 2 Tribes battle between two "movie stars."

Kyle Beaton takes on Johnny Montes in this edition of 2 Tribes.

First impression of Beaton/ Montes?

JM:
He’s a skinny, little, ballsy kid [laughs].
KB:
Who is this guy? Who am I meeting here? No, he seemed like an outgoing guy who wasn’t afraid to say anything to anyone.

Second impression of Beaton/ Montes?
JM: That he’s pretty down to earth.
KB: Pretty down to earth, says what ever is on his mind.

Who’s faster in racing?
JM: Beaton.
KB: I think you should just go see the results for that one [laughs].

Who’s faster in practice?
JM: Me.
KB: I’d like to say myself, because Johnny is too busy trying to break in his bike and he won’t jump the triples.

Who’s better at whips?
JM: Me. Oh, yeah, hands down. I can get it upside down.
KB: Montest can’t whip it! We’ll have a whip contest, and I will win for sure.

Current gym routine?
JM: An hour of cardio and then a half hour of weights.
KB: I haven’t actually been going to the gym. I have everything at home. Drew [Robertson] from Evolved Nutrition is helping me out, and I just bought a bunch of exercise stuff so I can workout at home. Doing a lot of cardio, stretching, balancing, and core work.

TV show you must watch each week?
JM: General Hospital. It’s my sensitivity training.
KB: I don’t really watch TV. I’m too glued to Guitar Hero!

Best bike you've ever owned?
JM: My 2006 KTM 250 SXF.
KB: Probably just this past year’s bike, my 2007 YZ250F. The thing was unbelieveably fast, Enzo had the suspension working the best I’ve ever had, and it just worked so good this year.

2008 Supercross champ: Chad Reed or James Stewart?
JM: Stewart.
KB: Chad Reed. I think things are going to change, and Stewart is bound to crash.

Favourite meal?
JM: Chicken Parmesan.
KB: Steak and potatoes.

Favourite drink?
JM: Monster blue. I drink it everyday!
KB: A cold glass of water!

Funniest road trip story.
JM: Back in the day, in the middle of no man’s land, Chuck’s [Mesley] truck broke down; we ran out of gas. We were stuck there for five hours, so one of my buddies hit the sauce and we hung out at the side of the road with my big trophy from the WCAN taking pictures until the tow truck came.
KB: This past weekend was pretty fun. Johnny and I flew out to Calgary to do a bit of work. It was just a great day. We got a call from sponsors to go out to this shindig; at the airport we were bumped up to first class; when we landed, we went out for a great meal.

Craziest Canadian you know?
JM: I know a lot of them. I want to say Boo Green, but he’s not so much crazy anymore.
KB: Kris Foster. That kid is a nutball. You tell him to go do anything, it could involve a motor, pedals, snow, boards—anything—and he can do it all.

Best pro race you’ve had?
JM: Sand Del Lee second moto last year. I started around 13th, fell four laps in and lost some spots, but I worked my way up to fifth, right behind fourth-place.
KB: My win in Nanaimo this year.

Best amateur race you’ve had?
JM: Winning the Plus 30 championship at Raymond [laughs]. No, third place in the 250 Intermediate class at the amateur national in La Toque. Blair Morgan won and I got third.
KB: Raymond Amateur National when I won the Bronze Boot in 2002.

Other sports you’re good at?
JM: I’m good at skiing, hockey, and badminton.
KB: I’m decent at a few, but not great. I road bike and mountain bike quite a bit.

Hottest chick?
JM: Reanna.
KB: Johnny’s Sarah [laughs].

Favourite band/ singer?
JM: I’m going to say a rap artist … Young Buck.
KB: That new Santana song is pretty good, and I listen to a lot of Buckcherry.

Most annoying thing about Beaton/ Montes?
JM: He’s too ballsy.
KB: He always has to be on the computer and we’ll plan to leave at a certain time, and he’ll be like, ‘Oh, five more minutes, five more minutes!’ Then an hour later we do what we wanted to do an hour ago.

Who’s in your regular crew?
JM: Chief, Monkey, Sears, and Nick.
KB: My buddy Shawn, Johnny, Newf, Kris Foster, and my school buddies.
