Simon Homans’ season is finally going forward. After mixed results and emotions through the first three rounds, the Yamaha rider came through at Moto Valley Raceway in Regina, SK for his first podium of the year. It actually came relatively easy for Homans too. In the second moto, after passing Dusty Klatt within three corners to move into second behind Colton Facciotti, Homans then gapped the field and rode by himself for much of the race. Klatt put on a charge late in the race, but Homans held tough and with a sixth in moto one, it was good enough for third overall.

RXC: Okay, Simon Homans, the first two rounds were so-so but, now, in Regina, you’re up on the podium. What clicked this weekend?
Simon Homans: Just a good start. After last weekend in Morden, when I holeshot, I did horrible and faded back to eighth. I said no way, this ain’t going to happen twice! I tried to follow Colton [Facciotti] and I pulled away from the pack a little bit. [Dusty] Klatt was behind me, I was feeling good on the track and my fitness is getting back into place.

Off the start in the second moto, it looked like Dusty was second around the first corner so I guess you passed him then?
Yeah, I passed him. He was in second and then I jumped that first jump really far, soaked up the tabletop and passed him in the next corner.

On the last lap, he snuck up right behind you and was ready to make a pass.
He charged hard but I was ready for it; I pushed harder too.

Things are tougher than ever for a lot of guys this year following the series and I know you weren’t sure about coming out west. Does your third overall relieve some stress?
People have to understand something: I have the money to come out west. I mean, I have the money in the bank, but I race to win money—it’s my job. If some year I can’t make money racing, I need to do something else, so this year I’m running a lot of motocross schools and giving lessons. Now I’ve come west, did well and I’m going to make a bit of money. I’m 26 years old. When you’re 18, who cares!

So we’re going to see you in Nanaimo and Edmonton?

I’m pretty sure I will be going. I wasn’t sure before, but now I’m 95 percent sure. I really want to go. It was weird today though—I did all of the mechanical stuff between motos. I had a person helping me out at the starting line but I did everything else myself.

To keep your momentum going, did you want me to line up a mud puddle every weekend for you to splash me with? It worked in Regina [laughs].
Yeah, [laughs] I think we’re going to find a farm close by, well go for a ride in the field and ask Aaron [Wiebe] to come over too.

Perfect! Good ride this weekend, Simon.
Thanks, Danny.
