Edmonton Race Report

No detail was spared at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, AB. From track prep to dirt to layout to pits, everything was top notch at Castrol.

KTM Canada's Jeff Northrop led his first laps of the year after passing Tyler Medaglia for the lead in the first MX1 moto. Northrop stayed in front for three laps until being passed by Colton Facciotti and a hard charging, Dusty Klatt. The KTM Canada rider had a good start in moto two but it looked like he may have dropped anchor. He still held on for fifth, however, behind Kyle Keast.

Aron "Holeshot" Harvey has four Royal Distributing holeshots and four moto wins in his last four motos. The Blackfoot rider was hauling around the Castrol track! While it's more rider than bike in MX, Harvey's YZ250F definitely looked like the fastest in MX2. He's now only 12 points back of Eric Nye in the championship.

Jeremy Medaglia finally got a break with a top five start in the first MX2 moto. Medaglia rode strong, passing up to second, and then rebounded from a bad start in moto two to finish sixth for third overall.

Machine Racing Honda's Kyle Keast couldn't get enough of the Castrol. Right from practice, he and Blair Morgan were putting in hard laps - often scrubbing paint with each other. Keast didn't make it easy on himself in moto one, however. (Does he ever make it easy on himself though?) After crashing in the first turn, Keast remounted and charged passed probably 20 riders within two laps. And then he crashed again ... again. The Honda rider didn't stop pushing, though, and he came back for seventh. In the second moto, Keast worked by Jeff Gibson and Jeff Northrop for fourth.

Teddy Maier was probably the second fastest MX2 guy in Edmonton, and he finished second overall with 3-2 scores. Despite missing Regina, Maier's been on the podium in the last two rounds and is now fifth points, seven back of Mason Phillips who sits third.

After winning a moto last weekend in Nanaimo, Dusty Klatt was looking to get back up front and challenge his BC rival, Colton Facciotti for some wins. The first moto saw him recover from a bad start to work his way up to second and it looked like if he could get a start we would see some great racing between the two. Unfortunately, Klatt again got a rare bad start in the second moto and just couldn't seem to charge like he did first moto, only making it up to sixth by the end of the race. His 2-6 gave him fourth overall.

Castrol Raceway fans have been the best yet! These guys and girls and kids were going crazy everytime a pass was made--and they really made themselves known when Morgan was chasing Colton Facciotti for the lead in the second moto.

Happy Blair! It's nice to see Blair Morgan walking around the pits with a big wide smile. He deserves it. "Superman" is riding better than ever and finished second overall in Edmonton with 5-2 scores. In the second moto, he was within three seconds of Colt at times.

Jacqueline Ross continues her roll from Gopher Dunes, having yet to lose a moto. Not much else has to say about Ms. Perfect, but I met her father, Joe, this weekend and he seemed cool!

Jared Allison went 13-9 for ninth overall and sits 11th in points. His twin brother, Parker, had his best weekend yet, finishing 14-10 for 12th overall. Good job, boys! I believe we're going to see Jared out east, but Parker is still unsure. Someone has to stay home and help out ma and pa around the farm!

Mason Phillips favoured the fast track in Edmonton. Phillips pulled a great start in the second moto to finish third. It was hot this weekend and the heat got to a few riders, especially Mason who suffered heat exhaustion and fainted at the KTM semi after the final moto. Fortunately, medics cooled him down and he'll be okay.

Multi-time Vet World Champion, Zoli Berenyi Sr. made a parade lap around the Edmonton track before Sunday's motos. In his mid 70's, not only is Berenyi Sr. still racing, he was also helping out around the track all weekend.

These two riders, Rockstar Suzuki's Tyler Medaglia and Blackfoot Yamaha's Colton Facciotti came into the weekend separated by a single point. Medaglia holeshot both motos but Facciotti would work his way by to take both wins and keep his overall win streak alive. Facciotti now leaves Edmonton enjoying a 11 point lead over Medaglia, who's 4-3 moto scores gave him third overall for the day.

Eric Nye came into the weekend sporting a healthy 38 point lead in the MX2 Championship and looked to be in the driver seat with four rounds to go. Unfortunately for Nye, two bad starts forced him to come from behind in both motos and he would finish 5-5 for 5th overall. With Harvey winning both motos, Nye's lead has been cut to 12 with three rounds remaining and things have just gotten interesting.

Teddy Maier, Aron Harvey and Jeremy Medaglia made up the MX2 podium.

The MX1 podium: Blair Morgan, Colton Facciotti and Tyler Medaglia.
